About APJ Park

The APJ Abdul Kalam Park, heralded as the latest iconic addition to the capital city, has officially opened its doors to the public.

Nestled in close proximity to Technopark and the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), this urban oasis boasts an impressive 750-meter-long cycle track and sprawls over a vast expanse exceeding one kilometer. The park, a testament to modern urban planning, materialized at an expenditure of `5.5 crores, made possible through the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) initiative. Its inaugural phase took flight in the year 2020.

However, the park's allure extends far beyond the cycling circuit. Visitors are treated to a plethora of amenities and attractions. These encompass well-maintained toilet facilities, a lively carnival area, an engaging children's park, an open-air gymnasium, a nutritional park, a serene herb garden, and a welcoming cafeteria. The culinary options are diverse, with offerings ranging from a traditional Kerala eatery to a multi-family restaurant, an ice cream parlor, and health drink kiosks. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the orchid counter, while entertainment seekers can revel in the musical fountain show and a lucky game center. For the literary-minded, there are book rental kiosks, and those yearning for aquatic adventures can enjoy the pedal boat service.

In addition to its myriad offerings, it's worth noting that the APJ Abdul Kalam Park holds the distinction of being Kerala's first "Nightlife Park". Opening its gates from 4 PM to 5 AM, it introduces an innovative concept that redefines urban leisure. This extended operating schedule allows visitors to revel in the park's attractions and ambiance well into the late hours, providing a dynamic and vibrant experience that truly comes alive after sunset, with the added benefit of being able to spend the night at the park, right up to the break of dawn.

One can hardly believe that this thriving park was once a desolate waste dump. The project's inception traces back to the tenure of the previous council, which recognized the pressing need for green spaces in Kazhakootam, one of the city's fastest-growing districts. This shortage of open areas has been especially taxing for residents of high-rise buildings, particularly those affiliated with the IT sector. An official from the engineering wing affirmed, "This space would be a monumental relief for flat dwellers, particularly those immersed in the IT industry."
